Prof. Wang received his Ph.D. degree from Wuhan University in 2008 under the supervision of Professor Xiang Zhou. He then held postdoctoral positions at the Department of Chemistry, Georgia State University (USA) in laboratory of Professor Binghe Wang (2008) and at the Department of Chemistry, University of Pittsburgh (USA) in laboratory of Professor Xinyu Liu (2010). In 2012, he joined Wuhan University as an associate professor and was promoted to Full Professor in 2019. His current research interests are mainly focused on the study of RNA epigenetics.
Q1: Who helped you the most as you pursued your research career?
Prof. Wang: My Ph.D. supervisor, Prof. Xiang Zhou, helped me the most and encouraged me to pursue my independent research in chemical biology. I joined in Prof. Binghe Wang’s group as a postdoc in 2008. Prof. Wang also has had a big influence on my research direction and scientific ambition.
Q2: What are some difficult challenges you have faced during your research career? How did you overcome them?
Prof. Wang: There are a lot of difficult challenges, but I believe the most difficult one is “Publish or Perish.”
Q3: Who is(are) scientist(s) you most respect or admire? Why?
Prof. Wang: I admire Robert S. Langer the most. The reason is that many of his discoveries have been translated, often by Langer himself.
Q4: What do you see as the biggest obstacles and most promising applications in your research area?
Prof. Wang: In my research area, one of the biggest obstacles is to understand how cells control the epigenetic modifications to their RNA. Now, it is becoming increasingly clear that the epigenetic modifications on RNA play important roles in many biological processes.
Q5: What advice so you have for younger students and researchers beginning their careers in chemistry, and in particular those interested in your field?
Prof. Wang: My advice is to complete the project in all respects and don't give up easily.
Q6: Thank you for publishing your superb work in CCS Chemistry! Could you provide a brief summary of your article and research direction in a few sentences?
Prof. Wang: The work we published in CCS Chemistry is based on our findings on the influence of 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-guanosine (rOG) lesions on telomeric repeat-containing RNA (TERRA) G4. We demonstrate that rOG located in the internal layer and external layer of TERRA impact the G4 stability in different ways and disturb both RNA replication and base-pair strength and stability.
