Professor Wenjing Tian completed her undergraduate study at the Department of Physics, Jilin University in 1988 and received her PhD from Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, CAS in 1993. From 1994 to 1996, she worked as a post-doctoral scholar at Jilin University and then joined the State Key Laboratory of Supramolecular Structure and Materials at Jilin University as an Associate Professor and later promoted to Professor. The research in her group focuses on organic/polymer opto-electronic materials, including supramolecular assembly of organic materials, high efficiency organic luminescent materials and their properties. She was awarded the First Prize of Natural Science of Ministry of Education in 2001 and First Prize of Natural Science of Jilin Province in 2014.
Q1: Who helped you the most as you pursued your research career?
Prof. Tian: My postdoctoral supervisor, Prof. Jiacong Shen, and the Director of the Key Laboratory of Supramolecular Structure and Materials, Prof. Xi Zhang, helped me the most as I pursued my research career.
Q2: Who stands out as the most beautiful chemist in your mind? What did you learn from her?
Prof. Tian: Prof. Jihong Yu from Jilin University stands out as the most beautiful chemist in my mind. What I learn from her is that how she loves life while devoting herself into scientific research and talent training at the same time.
Q3: What are some difficult challenges you have faced during your research career? How did you overcome them?
Prof. Tian: One of the most difficult challenges I have faced during my research career was how to open a new research direction when I started my own research group in 1999. In order to seek further research opportunity, I decided to go abroad to Germany as a visiting scholar to broaden my research interest. In order to do that, I had to leave my 4-year-old daughter at home, which was a very difficult decision. After one-year study in Germany, I started my own research in the field of organic/polymer solar cell back at Jilin University.
Q4:What advice or encouragement would you give to female students pursuing careers in scientific research?
Prof. Tian: I believe that anyone (male or female) who is interested in scientific research and willing to work hard will have the opportunity to make achievements in scientific research field. For female students pursuing careers in scientific research, you should have: 1. a specific aim; 2. a strong heart and body; 3. optimism; 4. good relations; and 5. cooperation.
Q5:Thank you for publishing your superb work in CCS Chemistry! Could you provide a brief summary of your article and current research direction in a few sentences?
Prof. Tian: We rationally designed and synthesized a NIR emissive D-A structure fluorescent probe TB-TPE with TICT and AIE duo-features. TP NPs are prepared by PS-PEG polymer matrix encapsulating TB-TPE, exhibiting an unusual polymer encapsulation enhanced emission, whose fluorescence Qy (46.5%) is 7 times higher than that of TB-TPE powder (6.6%) because the interaction between TB-TPE molecule and PS-PEG polymer matrix suppressed TICT process in polar solvent and destroyed the H-type aggregation in aggregate state of TB-TPE. Good performance of TP NPs in cellular imaging and imaging in vivo indicate that the facile strategy based on polymer encapsulation enhanced emission holds great potential for the application of AIEgens in biological fluorescence imaging. This study provides a novel method for the development of high-efficiency near-infrared fluorescence bioimaging contrast agent.
We are currently working toward developing high-efficient, near-infrared, and functional organic luminescent materials for biological imaging.
