    该专题由中国科学院海洋研究所徐奎栋研究员担任客座编辑。

    海山通常是指海面下高度超过千米的海底隆起，是深海大洋中的主要生态景观。

    海山以其高生物多样性、高渔业资源和高矿产资源价值，成为深海资源探测与开发的高关注区，也是“国家管辖海域外生物多样性(BBNJ)”保护的核心区域。

    热带西太平洋是全球海山最多、沟-弧-盆体系最发育、富钴结壳资源最富集的洋区，其中尤以雅浦海沟-马里亚纳海沟-卡罗琳洋脊区和麦哲伦海山链等最具代表性，这里邻近全球海洋生物多样性的中心区域，亦是海山探测研究极为欠缺的海域。

    自2014年至2019年，在中国科学院战略性先导科技专项(A类)和科技部科技基础资源调查专项“西太平洋典型海山生态系统科学考察”支持下，基于“科学”号科考船及其配备的“发现”号遥控潜水器(ROV)等先进装备，先后在热带西太平洋的雅浦海山(Y3)、马里亚纳海山(M2)、卡罗琳海山(M4)、麦哲伦海山链的Kocebu平顶山和卡罗琳洋脊海山(M5-M8)区开展了5个航次的海山综合科考，涉及地质、水文物理、化学和生物生态等多个学科。

    本专题共包含20篇论文，介绍了热带西太平洋海山生态系统和生物多样性的部分研究进展，涉及海山的地形和地球化学特征、水文物理和化学环境、微型生物多样性与生态学，以及海山最具特色的巨型底栖生物的分类学与系统发育研究。

    该系列研究旨在提升对热带西太平洋海山生态系统和生物多样性特征的基本认识，为深海海山脆弱海洋生态系统保护和合理开发利用提供科学依据。
