  • A flexible topo-optical sensing technology with ultra-high contrast

      Elastic folding, a phenomenon widely existing in nature, has attracted great interests to understand the math and physical science behind the topological transition on surface, thus can be used to create frontier engineering solutions. Here, we propose a topo-optical sensing strategy with ultra-high contrast by programming surface folds on targeted area with a thin optical indicator layer. A robust and precise signal generation can be achieved under mechanical compressive strains (>0.4). This approach bridges the gap in current mechano-responsive luminescence mechanism, by utilizing the unwanted oxygen quenching effect of Iridium-III (Ir-III) fluorophores to enable an ultra-high contrast signal. Moreover, this technology hosts a rich set of attractive features such as high strain sensing, encoded logic function, direct visualisation and good adaptivity to the local curvature, from which we hope it will enable new opportunities for designing next generation flexible/wearable devices.

  • Synthesis and properties of poly(aromatic diacetylene)s containing fluorene

      Novel fluorene-based poly(aromatic diacetylene)s have been synthesized by CuCl-catalyzed oxidative coupling of aromatic diynes. New aromatic diynes 2,7-diethynyl-9,9-bis(triphenylamine)fluorene (M"1) is synthesized by multistep reactions. The structures and properties of the polymers are characterized and evaluated by IR, NMR, TGA, UV, photoluminescence (PL), and cyclic voltammetry analyses. These polymers possess good thermal stability. All the polymers are completely soluble in common solvents such as toluene, THF, chloroform, and dichloromethane. The polymers exhibit strong blue photoluminescence in solution and green photoluminescence in the solid state. The polymer containing triphenylamine-substituted fluorene has lower oxidation potential (-5.45 eV) than the previous polyfluorenes (-5.80 eV).

  • Quantitative evaluation and

      In this study, a specifically-designed aggregation-induced emission fluorogen (AIEgen) with nanoparticle aggregates was used to quantitatively evaluate the bioaccumulation of Hg2+ and visualize Hg2+ kinetics in vivo within the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis for the first time. Quantitative results showed that a sharp drop in Hg2+ concentration occurred at the very beginning in the medium containing rotifers and Hg2+, showing a quick initial uptake of Hg2+ by the rotifers, and then the concentration in the medium plateaued after 5 min. With an increase in rotifer density, the amount of bioaccumulation increased in the rotifer. However, the bioaccumulation efficiency of Hg2+ decreased from 5.28 μg mg-1 h-1 at a low rotifer density of 0.093 mg ml-1 to 2.61 μg mg-1 h-1 at a high rotifer density of 0.375 mg mL-1. Moreover, the fluorescence images and spectra results illustrate that the ingestion of Hg2+ by the rotifer was via its mouth surrounded by the ciliary corona to the digestive tract, and Hg2+ could not permeate into the body integument through diffusion during the study period. Hg2+-induced fluorescence in rotifers dissipated in 6 h after staining, possibly through defecation and excretion. This study indicates that inorganic mercury can be quickly ingested by a rotifer via feeding, but is unlikely deposited as methylated mercury in rotifer tissues.

  • Isocyanoacetate-Aldehyde Polymerization

      As an important nitrogen source, isocyanides have been involved in numerous organic reactions. As a result, many complicated compounds have been successfully synthesized through isocyanide chemistry. However, compared with its popular research in organic reactions, the application of isocyanides in polymerization is less investigated. In this work, a new polymerization based on isocyanide monomers is established. By simply mixing diisocyanoacetates and dialdehydes in the presence of a catalytic system of CuCl/PPh3/organobase in dichloromethane at room temperature readily produces soluble and thermally stable oxazoline-containing polymers with moderate weight-averaged molecular weights (Mw up to 11 200) in excellent yields (up to 97%) after 6 h. Furthermore, introducing the tetraphenylethene moiety into the main chains endows the resultant polymers with aggregation-induced emission, which can function as fluorescent probes for Fe3+ ion detection with high sensitivity and selectivity. This work not only enriches the family of isocyanide-based polymerizations but also provides an efficient tool for the preparation of functional heterocycle-containing polymers.

  • Synthesis and chiroptical properties of i-valine-containing poly(phenylacetylene)s with (A)chiral pendant terminal groups

      Poly(phenylacetylene)s containing L-valine residues (PI) with (a)chiral pendant terminal groups R(*) [-(HC=C(C6H 4CONHCH[CH(CH3)2]COO-R(*)}) n-]; R(*) = 1-octyl (Plo), (1S,2R,5S)-(+)-menthyl [P1(+)], (1R,2S,5R)-(-)-menthyl [P1(-)] are designed and synthesized. The polymers are prepared by organorhodium catalysts in high yields (yield up to 88%) with high molecular weights (Mw up to ∼6.4 × 105). Their structures and properties are characterized by NMR, IR, TGA, UV, and circular dichroism analyses. All the polymers are thermally fairly stable (Td ≥ 320 °C). The chiral moieties induce the poly(phenylacetylene) chains to helically rotate in a preferred direction. The chirality of the pendant terminal groups affects little the helicity of the polymers but their bulkiness stabilizes the helical conformation against solvent perturbation. The backbone conjugation and chain helicity of the polymers can be modulated continuously and reversibly by acid.

  • Sterol-containing tetraphenylethenes

      Cholesterol- and stigmasterol-containing tetraphenylethenes (TPEs) (TPE-Chol and TPE-Stig) are facilely synthesized in satisfactory yields by Cu (I)-catalyzed click reaction of 1,2-bis(4-azidomethylphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene and cholesteryl-4-ethylbenoate and sigmasteryl 11-(4-ethynylphenoxy)undecanoate, respectively. Whereas they are nonluminescent in solution, they become highly emissive when aggregated in the condensed phase. The molecules of TPE-Stig can self-assemble in methanol solution, generating organogels with gelation-induced emission characteristics.

  • High solid-state fluorescence in ring-shaped AEE-active tetraphenylsilole derivatives

      Three ring-shaped AEE-active silole-containing compounds were synthesized by mild condensation reactions. Cyclotrisiloxane compound 1 displays high solid-state quantum yield (Φ fl = 0.86) with the fluorescence maximum at 512 nm. This high fluorescence efficiency results mainly from decreased vibrational pathways to fluorescence decay due to the intramolecular C-H⋯π interactions.

  • A simple approach to bioconjugation at diverse levels

      The efficient bioconjugation of functional groups/molecules to targeted matrix and bio-related species drives the great development of material science and biomedicine, while the dilemma of metal catalysis, uneasy premodification, and limited reaction efficiency in traditional bioconjugation has restricted the booming development to some extent. Here, we provide a strategy for metal-free click bioconjugation at diverse levels based on activated alkynes. As a proof-of-concept, the abundant native groups including amine, thiol, and hydroxyl groups can directly react with activated alkynes without any modification in the absence of metal catalysis. Through this strategy, high-efficient modification and potential functionalization can be achieved for natural polysaccharide, biocompatible polyethylene glycol (PEG), synthetic polymers, cell penetrating peptide, protein, fast whole-cell mapping, and even quick differentiation and staining of Gram-positive bacteria, etc. Therefore, current metal-free click bioconjugation strategy based on activated alkynes is promising for the development of quick fluorescence labeling and functional modification of many targets and can be widely applied towards the fabrication of complex biomaterials and future in vivo labeling and detection.
