  • Maximizing integrated optical and electrical properties of a single ZnO nanowire through native interfacial doping

    • 摘要:

      A native interfacial doping layer introduced in core-shell type ZnO nanowires by a simple vapor phase re-growth procedure endows the produced nanowires with both excellent electrical and optical performances compared to conventional homogeneous ZnO nanowires. The unique Zn-rich interfacial structure in the core-shell nanowires plays a crucial role in the outstanding performances.

  • Study of the conductance and structure characteristics of C60/Sb bilayers

      The electrical and structural properties of C60/Sb bilayers were investigated. In situ direct-current conductivity measurement results indicate that the doping of Sb into C60 induces the C60 order-disorder phase transition temperature to increase to ∼278 K. According to the results of a transmission electron microscope and atomic force microscope study, such a transition (near 278 K) implies the formation of an interfacial structure of Sb-doped C60. Annealing and the absorption of gases destroy the interfacial structure of Sb-doped C60. A possible mechanism for such a phase transition is discussed.

  • Elastic properties of a van der Waals solid

    • 摘要:

      The elastic response (Young's modulus and internal friction) of solid C60 has been measured in single-crystal specimens as a function of temperature. We determine a Debye temperature of ∼100 K and a room-temperature Young's modulus of 2.0±0.5×1011 dyn/cm2. The elastic properties are strongly anharmonic and indicate phase transitions at ∼150 and ∼269 K.

  • Effects of dangling ends on the conductance of side-contacted carbon nanotubes

      We have computed the conductance of a side-contacted metallic carbon nanotube(CNT) with one end dangling outside a probe by using a tight-binding model. We have also demonstrated that the average conductance of a CNT with a finite dangling end is about twice as that of CNT with an infinite dangling end. When the contact between a side probe and a CNT is monoatomic, the conductance strongly depends on the length of the dangling end. Quasilocalized states at the dangling end can cause antiresonances, affecting transmission probability when a probe is near the end.

  • Resistivity saturation in alkali-doped C60

    • 摘要:

      The high-temperature resisitivity of K and Rb-doped C60 single crystals was measured with pulsed heating techniques and analyzed within the parallel-resistor extension to Bloch-Boltzmann transport theory. Rb3C60 exhibits resitivity saturation with ρ{variant}satRb ≈ 6 ± 3mΩ-cm, corresponding to a saturation mean free path of ℓsatRb ≈ 1 ± 0.5 A ̊. In contrast K3C60 does not show signs of resistivity saturation up to 800 K, suggesting that ρ{variant}satK > 3mΩ-cm and ℓsatK < 1.5 A ̊. The electronic states at high temperature have a characteristic length scale significantly smaller than the fcc lattice constant.

  • Self-assembly and the properties of a highly oriented hierarchical nanobelt-nanoprism array of ternary oxide Zn-In-O

    • 摘要:

      A highly oriented, well-aligned hierarchical Zn-In-O nanobelt-nanoprism array was synthesized by vapor-phase transport and condensation using GaN epilayer as the substrate. The upper nanobelts are found to be ZnO:In with an average Zn/In molar ratio of approximately 9:1, and the subjacent nanoprisms are found to be In2O3(ZnO)m (m = 2, 3, 4, and 5) structures. During self-assembly, the nanoprisms are vertically grown on GaN and well aligned along the superlattice stacking direction, upon which each nanobelt is horizontally grown along its [10-10] direction. The spatially resolved cathodoluminescence spectra collected on individual hierarchical nanostructures clearly show characteristics for the ZnO:In nanobelt and for the In2O3(ZnO)m nanoprism, which are distinctly different from the emissions of the undoped ZnO nanorod. I-V measurements on individual nanobelts reveal good conductivity over 103 Sm -1 and high electron concentration of 1019-1020 cm-3. This bottom-up self-assembled, highly oriented, and well-aligned hierarchical nanoarray may find applications in newly emerging vertically integrated nanoarray circuits.

  • Formation of (110) oriented layered silver nano-crystallites

    • 摘要:

      A technique for growth of layered silver nano-crystallites and C60 by vapor co-deposition is reported. It is found that the epitaxial relationship and growth morphology of Ag films on NaCl substrate were significantly affected by co-deposition of small amounts of C60. The temperature of the source of C60 was 350°C, and a layer of Ag nano-crystallites all with (110) orientation was grown on a hot (001) NaCl substrate. Moreover, co-deposition of C60 prevented coalescence of Ag nano-particles into large grains. Thus, granular films were obtained with high density of oriented Ag nano-crystallites with a narrow size distribution.

  • Observation of co-existence of 'face-on' and 'edge-on' stacking styles in a porphyrin monolayer

      We report a direct observation adopting 'face-on' and 'edge-on' stacking styles in monolayer of a novel porphyrin derivative on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) using scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The porphyrin derivative, 5-hydroxyphenyl-10, 15, 20-trikis(4-dodecyloxyphenyl) porphyrinatozinc(II) (ZnDPPOH) is synthesized and assembled on HOPG. In the STM images, we observed two kinds of ordered domains. One consists of ZnDPPOH dimmers, adopting 'face-on' stacking style, the other exhibits a segmented columnar structure, like piled-up 'armchairs', lying down on the substrate, adopting an 'edge-on' stacking style. In the latter case, the conjugated and highly delocalized π-systems play key roles in stabilizing the monolayer.

  • Orientational phase transition in C60 single crystal under high pressure

    • 摘要:

      By using a piston-cylinder type hydrostatic high-pressure unit, the electrical dc conductance of bulk C60 single crystal was measured in the pressure range of 0 to 0.6 GPa at 290 K. With increasing pressure, a discontinuous increase of the conductance was observed at the pressure of 0.176 GPa, which can be ascribed to the orientational ordering phase transition. In the simple cubic phase, the increase of conductance with increasing pressure is faster than that in the face-centered-cubic phase.
