  • Photorefractive properties of Zn:Ce:Fe:LiNbO3crystals at abnormal temperature

      Doped with 2%(in mole) Zn, 0.1% (in mass, the same below) Ce and 0.03% Fe and various mole ratios n(Li)/n(Nb) = 0.94, 1.10, 1.25, and 1.40 of LiNbO3, Zn:Ce:Fe:LiNbO3crystals were grown by the Czochralski method. Using two wave coupling optical paths, the exponential gain coefficient of the crystals was measured. With n(Li)/n(Nb) increasing, the exponential gain coefficient of Zn:Ce:Fe:LiNbO3crystals increased. Using four wave mixing optical paths, the phase conjugate properties of the crystals were measured. As n(Li)/n(Nb) increasing, the phase conjugate reflectivity and response speed increase. The study of the temperature effect on Zn:Ce:Fe:LiNbO3crystals at 55, 70 °C and 110 °C find that the exponential gain coefficient and phase conjugate reflectivity increase, implied by the peak intensity increasing in exponential gain coefficient-temperature (Γ-T) curve and phase conjugate reflectivity- temperature (R-T) curve. The photorefractive properties of Zn:Ce:Fe:LiNbO3crystals at abnormal temperature is discussed based on the phase structure change.

  • Efficient 1:8 μm KTiOPO4 optical parametric oscillator pumped within an Nd:YAG=SrWO4 Raman laser

      A 1:8 μm optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on a noncritically phase-matched KTiOPO4 crystal is demonstrated. OPO and stimulated Raman scattering techniques are successfully combined in an acousto-optically Q-switched Nd:YAG=SrWO4 Raman laser. The device efficiently realizes three steps of conversion: from a laser diode wavelength of 808nm to the fundamental wavelength of 1064nm; next, to the Stokes wavelength of 1180nm; and finally to the OPO signal wavelength of 1810nm. With an incident diode power of 7:2W and a pulse repetition rate of 15 kHz, an average signal power of 485mW is obtained with a diode-to-signal conversion efficiency of 6.75%. The beam quality factors (M2) of the signal wave in both horizontal and vertical directions are measured to be 1:7 ± 0:2. The numerical output power results of the system, the thermal lensing, and the stability parameter of the cavity are also discussed. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

  • High efficiency KTiOAsO 4 optical parametric oscillator within a diode-side-pumped two-rod Nd:YAG laser

      A high efficiency KTiOAsO 4 (KTA) intracavity optical parametric oscillator (IOPO) is demonstrated within a diode-side-pumped acousto-optically (AO) Q-switched two-rod Nd:YAG laser. With a 25-mm-long X-cut KTA crystal, efficient parametric conversions to signal (1.54 μm) and idler (3.47 μm) waves are realized. The highest output power of 15.8 W including 12.7 W signal and 3.1 W idler power is obtained at a repetition rate of 7.5 kHz and a pump power of 208 W, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of up to 7.6%. The signal pulse duration is 32 ns with a peak power of 53 kW. At a repetition rate of 12.5 kHz and the pump power of 208 W, the highest idler power of 3.4 W is obtained with a peak power of 14 kW and a pulse duration of 19 ns. And the beam quality factors (M 2 ) of the signal and idler waves are determined to be around 2 and 20, respectively. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

  • Comparison of c-Nd:YVO 4 /YVO 4 raman lasers and c-Nd:YVO 4 self-Raman lasers

      Raman lasers based on c-Nd:YVO 4 crystals can generate 1178 nm Stokes line, which can be frequency-doubled to realize 589 nm sodium lasers. We make comparative experimental studies of c-Nd:YVO 4 /YVO 4 Raman lasers and c-Nd:YVO 4 self-Raman lasers. About these two kinds of lasers, the output characteristics of power, center wavelength and beam quality are measured and compared. © 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

  • Intracavity KTiOAsO 4 optical parametric oscillator pumped by an actively Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser

      A KTiOAsO 4 (KTA) intracavity optical parametric oscillator (IOPO) is achieved within a diode end-pumped acousto-optically Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. With a 25-mm-long X-cut KTA crystal, efficient parametric conversions to signal (1535 nm) and idler (3467 nm) waves are realized. At an incident diode power of 14.9 W, the highest output power of 1.83 W including 1.37 W of signal and 0.46 W of idler radiations are obtained at a repetition rate of 40 kHz, corresponding to a total optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 12.3%. Rate equations model are used to simulate this system, and the theoretical results agree with the experimental ones. © Pleiades Publishing, Ltd., 2012.

  • Transmission type of collinear volume holographic storage technology based on LiNbO3crystal

      Collinear (Coaxial) volume holographic data storage (CVHDS) is one of the promising technologies for the commercialization of the volume holographic data storage. In order to optimize the parameters for the construction of transmission type of CVHDS system, some CVHDS properties such as storage density, crosstalk characteristics and crystal storage property are investigated. The relation between the storage density of CVHDS and the parameters of objective lens, the pixel pitch of the spatial light modulator (SLM), the effective pixel number of the SLM and the shift pitch for multiplexing are theoretically derived. The physical interpretation for the expression of the point spread function is proposed. The crosstalk property is analyzed for different reference patterns based on point spread function. Then the polarization state in the photorefractive crystal is optimized for as larger dynamic range as possible. Finally, the transmission type of CVHDS system based on LiNbO3crystal is constructed for the data-storage experimental test. Data-storage experimental results indicate that pictures with high resolution can be recorded and reconstructed with high fidelity by this system. Compared with the two-axis geometry, the optical setup of the CVHDS system is more concise and smaller in size.

  • Theoretical and experimental studies on passively Q-Switched KTiOAsO 4 optical parametric oscillator

      A passively Q-switched intracavity optical parametric oscillator based on KTiOAsO 4 (KTA) crystal is studied theoretically and experimentally. The rate-equation-based theoretical model is established to describe the time evolutions of the population inversion density of the laser crystal, ground-state population density of the saturable absorber, fundamental photon density, signal photon density and the idler photon density. In the experiment, a laser diode-end pumped, passively Q-switched Nd:YAG/KTA IOPO with a Cr 4+ :YAG crystal as the saturable absorber is realized to verify this model. The characteristics including the output power, the pulse repetition rate, the pulse width and the beam quality were investigated for this OPO. The experimental results for the output power and the repetition rate agree with the theory well. And both results show that with same pumping level the idler pulse width is shorter than the signal one. © Pleiades Publishing, Ltd., 2012.

  • Frequency-doubled Nd:Gd 3Ga 5O 12/BaWO 4 raman laser emitting at 589nm

      A frequency-doubled BaWO 4 Raman laser is realized inside an acousto-optically Q-switched Nd:Gd 3Ga 5O 12 laser end-pumped by a fibercoupled diode laser. First-Stokes Raman laser at 1178.2nm is obtained, and intracavity second-harmonic generation is then accomplished to generate the 589nm emission. This laser line has potential application to realize sodium guide stars. Under an incident diode power of 8.84W and a pulse repetition rate of 10 kHz, we obtain a 589nm output power of 0.82 W. The pulse duration is 9 ns, which leads to a peak power of 9.1 kW. © 2012 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

  • Diode-pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YAG/BaWO4/KTP yellow laser

      A diode-pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YAG/BaWO4/KTP yellow laser is presented for the first time. The obtained maximum average output power, conversion efficiency, pulse energy were 1.21 W, 9.06%, and 68.5 μJ, respectively. © 2012 OSA.

  • Collinear holographic data storage system in LiNbO3crystal

      A transmission type of collinear holographic data storage system (CHDS) based on photorefractive LiNbO3crystal is constructed. The polarization states of the coherent beams in the crystal are optimized for a larger dynamic range based on the coupled mode theory and the linearized band transport model of photorefractive effect. The optimization predicts that the photorefractive crystal will have a larger dynamic range by use of extraordinary light than using ordinary light for CHDS system when the grating wave vector is parallel to the c-axis of the crystal. It also predicts that the dynamic range for CHDS can be larger than that for traditional 90 degree holographic recording geometry. In the experimental results, data pages are recorded with the shifting multiplexing method in the LiNbO3crystal by using the extraordinary light. © 2012 SPIE.
