  • Demonstration of a compiled version of shor's quantum factoring algorithm using photonic qubits

      We report an experimental demonstration of a complied version of Shor's algorithm using four photonic qubits. We choose the simplest instance of this algorithm, that is, factorization of N=15 in the case that the period r=2 and exploit a simplified linear optical network to coherently implement the quantum circuits of the modular exponential execution and semiclassical quantum Fourier transformation. During this computation, genuine multiparticle entanglement is observed which well supports its quantum nature. This experiment represents an essential step toward full realization of Shor's algorithm and scalable linear optics quantum computation.

  • A portable device for studying the effects of fluid flow on degradation properties of biomaterials inside cell incubators

      A portable device was designed and constructed for studying the properties of biomaterials in physiologically relevant fluids under controllable flow conditions that closely simulate fluid flow inside the body. The device can fit entirely inside a cell incubator; and, thus, it can be used directly under standard cell culture conditions. An impedance-driven pump was built in the sterile flow loop to control the flow rates of fluids, which made the device small and portable for easy deployment in the incubator. To demonstrate the device functions, magnesium (Mg) as a representative biodegradable material was tested in the flow device for immersion degradation under flow versus static conditions, while the flow module was placed inside a standard cell incubator. The flow rate was controlled at 0.17 6 0.06 ml/s for this study; and, the flow rate is adjustable through the controller module outside of incubators for simulating the flow rates in the ranges of blood flow in human artery (0.05 0.43 ml/s) and vein (0.02 0.08 ml/s). Degradation of Mg under flow versus static conditions was characterized by measuring the changes of sample mass and thickness, and Mg ion concentrations in the immersion media. Surface chemistry and morphology of Mg after immersion under flow versus static conditions were compared. The portable impedance-driven flow device is easy to fit inside an incubator and much smaller than a peristaltic pump, providing a valuable solution for studying biomaterials and implants (e.g. vascular or ureteral stents) in body fluids under flow versus static conditions with or without cells.

  • Effect of rare earth elements on powder boro-carbo-nitriding at low temperature

      The process of the co-cementation layers of low temperature powder multicomponent thermochemical treatment with B-C-N-RE and the structure and properties were studied and compared with those of conventional boro-carbo-nitriding (B-C-N) by X-ray diffractometer, potentiostat and wear machine. The results show that rare earth elements have significant catalytic effect within proper limits. Both wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the B-C-N-RE co-cementation layer are greatly increased in comparison with those of the B-C-N. The function mechanism of rare earth elements is also discussed.

  • Feshbach spectroscopy of an ultracold K 41 - Li 6 mixture and K 41 atoms

      We observe 69 K41-6Li interspecies Feshbach resonances including 13 elastic p-wave resonances and 6 broad d-wave resonances of K41 atoms in different spin-state combinations at fields up to 600 G. Multichannel quantum-defect theory calculation is performed to assign these resonances and the results show perfect agreement with experimental values after improving input parameters. The observed broad p- and d-wave resonances display a fully resolved multiplet structure. They may serve as important simulators to nonzero partial-wave-dominated physics.

  • Bell's inequalities and quantum communication complexity

      The study showed that the necessary and sufficient condition for quantum protocols to have a higher success rate than any classical protocol is that the state violates a Bell inequality. For every Bell inequality, it was shown that, there always exists a communication complexity problem (CCP), for which the protocol assisted by states which violate the inequality is more efficient than any classical protocol. A quantum competitor was introduced before showing the maximum probability of success in a protocol. It was also shown that the results could be generalized to Bell inequalities with higher-dimensional systems and more measurement settings.

  • Classifying [Formula presented]-Qubit Entanglement via Bell’s Inequalities

      All the states of [Formula presented] qubits can be classified into [Formula presented] entanglement classes from 2-entangled to [Formula presented]-entangled (fully entangled) states. Each class of entangled states is characterized by an entanglement index that depends on the partition of [Formula presented]. The larger the entanglement index of a state, the more entangled or the less separable is the state in the sense that a larger maximal violation of Bell’s inequality is attainable for this class of state.

  • Comparing the Risk of Shunt-Dependent Hydrocephalus in Patients with Ruptured Intracranial Aneurysms Treated by Endovascular Coiling or Surgical Clipping

      Background: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the risk of shunt-dependent hydrocephalus among patients with ruptured intracranial aneurysms treated with either coil placement or clipping. Methods: A systematic literature search of Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library was performed to confirm relevant studies. The scientific literature was screened in accordance with the predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. After quality assessment and data extraction from the eligible studies, a meta-analysis was conducted using the STATA 12.0 software (Stata corporation, College Station, Texas, USA). Results: Thirteen studies met all inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. In total, these studies included 13,751 patients. Of the patients, 8444 of them underwent neurosurgical clipping, and 5307 underwent endovascular coiling. The overall result of a pooled estimate revealed there was no statistically significant risk of shunt dependency difference between the clipping and coiling groups (11.4% vs. 12.0%, respectively; relative risk [RR], 0.92; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.84–1.01). Six prospective studies (n = 1373) reported shunt-dependent hydrocephalus revealed no significant difference between clipping and coiling (23.3% vs. 20.1%, respectively; RR, 1.12; 95% CI, 0.91–1.38). Seven retrospective studies (n = 12,378) reported shunt-dependent hydrocephalus found statistical significance between the surgical and endovascular treatment groups (10.0% vs. 11.1%, respectively; RR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.79–0.98). Conclusions: Microsurgical clipping and endovascular coiling of ruptured cerebral aneurysms are associated with similar incidences of ventricular shunt placement for hydrocephalus. The risk of shunt-dependent hydrocephalus is not higher after coiling than after clipping of ruptured intracranial aneurysms.

  • Wnt and Notch signaling pathways in calcium phosphate-enhanced osteogenic differentiation

      Calcium phosphate (CaP) ceramics are being increasingly used to repair critical bone defect for biocompatibility, biosafety, porous structure and osteoinduction. Wnt and Notch signaling pathways are conservative and classic signaling pathways regulating osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSCs). In this study, we evaluated the expression of Wnt, Notch signal pathways and osteogenic related genes of BMSCs with and without Wnt pathway inhibitor DKK1 on CaP ceramics in vitro by real-time RT-PCR. Also, we evaluated new bone formation after implantation of CaP ceramics in vivo. The in vitro culture displayed the expression of Wnt, Notch signaling pathways and osteogenic related genes was increased at first and then declined. After adding DKK1 to the culture, the expression was decreased. The in vivo implantation showed significant bone formation on CaP ceramics. These findings reveal that Wnt and Notch signaling pathways play important roles in the CaP-enhanced osteogenic differentiation but the mechanism of synergistic effect needs to be further explored.

  • Ced-9 inhibits Al-induced programmed cell death and promotes Al tolerance in tobacco

      Our previous data showed that apoptotic suppressors inhibit aluminum (Al)-induced programmed cell death (PCD) and promote Al tolerance in yeast cells, however, very little is known about the underlying mechanisms, especially in plants. Here, we show that the Caenorhabditis elegans apoptotic suppressor Ced-9, a Bcl-2 homologue, inhibited both the Al-induced PCD and Al-induced activity of caspase-like vacuolar processing enzyme (VPE), a crucial executioner of PCD, in tobacco. Furthermore, we show that Ced-9 significantly alleviated Al inhibition of root elongation, decreased Al accumulation in the root tip and greatly inhibited Al-induced gene expression in early response to Al, leading to enhancing the tolerance of tobacco plants to Al toxicity. Our data suggest that Ced-9 promotes Al tolerance in plants via inhibition of Al-induced PCD, indicating that conserved negative regulators of PCD are involved in integrated regulation of cell survival and Al-induced PCD by an unidentified mechanism.
