  • Probabilistic instantaneous quantum computation

      The time aspect of teleportation-based quantum computation was considered. It was shown that with finite probability the computational time of an arbitrarily long quantum computation can be saved completely. The basic idea was to use quantum teleportation to perform the entire quantum computation even before its quantum input was defined. This then allows with certain exponentially small probability to obtain the output of the computation immediately after its input was given.

  • Preparation and storage of frequency-uncorrelated entangled photons from cavity-enhanced SPDC

      We report the preparation and storage of frequency-uncorrelated cavity-enhanced SPDC entangled photons. The frequency correlation is eliminated with a suitable pulsed pump. The storage of a single photon entangled with another flying photon is demonstrated.

  • Collisional decoherence during writing and reading quantum states

      Collisions, even though they do not limit the lifetime of quantum information stored in ground-state hyperfine coherences, may severely limit the fidelity for quantum memory when they happen during the write and read process. This imposes restrictions on the implementation of Raman-type quantum processes in thermal vapor cells and their performance as a quantum memory. We study the effect of these collisions in our experiment.

  • Generation of entangled coherent states for distant Bose-Einstein condensates via electromagnetically induced transparency

      We propose a method to generate entangled coherent states between two spatially separated atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) via the technique of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Two strong coupling laser beams and two entangled probe laser beams are used to cause two distant BECs to be in EIT states and to generate an atom-photon entangled state between probe lasers and distant BECs. The two BECs are initially in unentangled product coherent states while the probe lasers are initially in an entangled state. Entangled states of two distant BECs can be created through the performance of projective measurements upon the two outgoing probe lasers under certain conditions. Concretely, we propose two protocols to show how to generate entangled coherent states of the two distant BECs. One is a single-photon scheme in which an entangled single-photon state is used as the quantum channel to generate entangled distant BECs. The other is a multiphoton scheme where an entangled coherent state of the probe lasers is used as the quantum channel. Additionally, we also obtain some atom-photon entangled states of particular interest such as entangled states between a pair of optical Bell states (or quasi-Bell-states) and a pair of atomic entangled coherent states (or quasi-Bell-states).

  • Long distance quantum teleportation

    • 摘要:

      Quantum teleportation is a core protocol in quantum information science. Besides revealing the fascinating feature of quantum entanglement, quantum teleportation provides an ultimate way to distribute quantum state over extremely long distance, which is crucial for global quantum communication and future quantum networks. In this review, we focus on the long distance quantum teleportation experiments, especially those employing photonic qubits. From the viewpoint of real-world application, both the technical advantages and disadvantages of these experiments are discussed.

  • Advances in InGaAs/InP single-photon detector systems for quantum communication

      Single-photon detectors (SPDs) are the most sensitive instruments for light detection. In the near-infrared range, SPDs based on III-V compound semiconductor avalanche photodiodes have been extensively used during the past two decades for diverse applications due to their advantages in practicality including small size, low cost and easy operation. In the past decade, the rapid developments and increasing demands in quantum information science have served as key drivers to improve the device performance of single-photon avalanche diodes and to invent new avalanche quenching techniques. This Review aims to introduce the technology advances of InGaAs/InP single-photon detector systems in the telecom wavelengths and the relevant quantum communication applications, and particularly to highlight recent emerging techniques such as high-frequency gating at GHz rates and free-running operation using negative-feedback avalanche diodes. Future perspectives of both the devices and quenching techniques are summarized.

  • Angioarchitectural characteristics associated with complications of embolization in supratentorial brain arteriovenous malformation

      BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Embolization is an important therapeutic technique in brain arteriovenous malformations; however, little has been reported on the factors contributing to complications. We retrospectively reviewed a large series of supratentorial brain AVMs to identify the angioarchitectural characteristics that might be associated with the complications of embolization and poor clinical outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical and angiographic features of 130 consecutive patients with supratentorial brain AVMs embolized with ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer in our hospital from 2005-2008 were retrospectively reviewed. None of these patients had prior embolization. Complications were classified as transient neurologic deficits, persistent neurologic deficits, and death. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to assess the angiographic features in patients with and without complications. RESULTS: Twenty-three complications occurred in 130 embolization procedures, 13 (10%) were transient neurologic deficits (9 ischemic and 4 hemorrhagic), 9 (6.92%) were persistent neurologic deficits (7 ischemic and 2 hemorrhagic), and 1 death occurred. By univariate analyses, eloquent cortex (OR, 2.57; 95% CI, 1.08 -3.42) and exclusive deep venous drainage (OR, 4.56; 95% CI, 1.28 -9.67) were correlated with procedural complications. The impaction of eloquent cortical location (P = .001) and exclusive deep venous drainage (P = .035) on complications were also demonstrated by multivariate analysis. Eloquent cortex mainly resulted in permanent ischemic neurologic deficit; occlusion of drainage vein was significantly correlated with periprocedural hemorrhage in supratentorial brain AVMs with subtotal and partial embolization. CONCLUSIONS: In a retrospective study on supratentorial brain AVMs with first-time embolization, 6.92% of patients had permanent neurologic deficit or death. Eloquent cortical location and exclusive deep venous drainage were associated with complications.

  • Serum ST2 as a potential prognostic biomarker for traumatic brain injury

      Background: ST2, a receptor of interleukin-33, is involved in inflammation. We discerned the relationship between serum soluble ST2 (sST2) concentrations, inflammation, severity and prognosis following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods: We measured serum sST2, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, C-reactive protein, myelin basic protein, glial fibrillary astrocyte protein, S100B, neuron-specific enolase, phosphorylated axonal neurofilament subunit H, Tau and ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase L1 concentrations in 106 healthy controls and 106 severe TBI patients. We recorded long-term prognosis (i.e., 6-month mortality and functional outcome) and in-hospital major adverse events, including in-hospital mortality, acute lung injury, acute traumatic coagulopathy, progressive hemorrhagic injury and posttraumatic cerebral infarction. Results: sST2 concentrations were significantly higher in patients than in controls and were significantly correlated with Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score and the preceding biomarkers concentrations. Serum sST2 was an independent prognostic predictor and its predictive ability significantly exceeded those of serum interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and C-reactive protein concentrations and was similar to those of GCS scores and serum concentrations of other remaining biomarkers. Moreover, sST2 concentrations significantly improved predictive ability of GCS score. Conclusion: Increased serum sST2 concentrations are significantly related to inflammation, severity and prognosis, substantialized ST2 as a potential prognostic biomarker for TBI.

  • Verifying genuine high-order entanglement

      High-order entanglement embedded in multipartite multilevel quantum systems (qudits) with many degrees of freedom (DOFs) plays an important role in quantum foundation and quantum engineering. Verifying high-order entanglement without the restriction of system complexity is a critical need in any experiments on general entanglement. Here, we introduce a scheme to efficiently detect genuine high-order entanglement, such as states close to genuine qudit Bell, Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger, and cluster states as well as multilevel multi-DOF hyperentanglement. All of them can be identified with two local measurement settings per DOF regardless of the qudit or DOF number. The proposed verifications together with further utilities such as fidelity estimation could pave the way for experiments by reducing dramatically the measurement overhead.
