  • Enhanced silicon single-photon avalanche diode based on light trapping

      We present a nano-structured light-trapping Si SPAD with improved detection efficiency, without sacrificing jitter distribution or dark count rate. The design can be adopted for CMOS-compatible SPAD image sensors and silicon photomultipliers.

  • The influence of HCMV infection on autophagy in THP-1 cells

      Background: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection is very common and latency can be reactivated in the future. And it can alter the intracellular environment, similar to other herpesviruses, for viral replication and survival. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of HCMV infection on autophagy in human acute monocytic leukemia cell line (THP-1 cells). Methods: Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), western blot, and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to examine autophagy level. The concentrations of autophagy-related proteins Beclin 1, Atg5, and the light chain three (LC3) were counted when compared with actin level. Results: The expression levels of Beclin1, Atg5, and LC3II mRNAs increased gradually between 1 and 5 days(d) postinfection (p.i.) and subsequently decreased little by little when compared with the control THP-1 cells. However, results of western blot analysis displayed that the level of LC3II increased gradually after 1 day p.i. and decreased at 7 days after infection. But the levels of Atg5 and Beclin1 increased gradually after 2 days p.i. and began to decrease at 5 days after infection, respectively. Conclusion: These results suggested that HCMV infection can facilitate the autophagy and autophagy level may decrease in latent phase. More studies on the relationship between HCMV latency and autophagy are needed to determine the role of autophagy in HCMV latent infection that may help find out a therapeutic approach for clinical treatment.   • Oscillatory-like expansion of a Fermionic superfluid

      We study the expansion behaviors of a Fermionic superfluid in a cigar-shaped optical dipole trap for the whole BEC-BCS crossover and various temperatures. At low temperature (0.06(1)TF), the atom cloud undergoes an anisotropic hydrodynamic expansion over 30 ms, which behaves like oscillation in the horizontal plane. By analyzing the expansion dynamics according to the superfluid hydrodynamic equation, the effective polytropic index γ¯ of Equation-of-State (EoS) of Fermionic superfluid is extracted. The γ¯ values show a non-monotonic behavior over the BEC-BCS crossover, and have a good agreement with the theoretical results in the unitarity and BEC side. The normalized quasi-frequencies of the oscillatory expansion are measured, which drop significantly from the BEC side to the BCS side and reach a minimum value of 1.73 around 1/kFa=-0.25. Our work improves the understanding of the dynamic properties of strongly interacting Fermi gas.

  • Contralateral acute subdural hematoma following traumatic acute subdural hematoma evacuation

      Contralateral acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) occurring after removal of traumatic ASDH is a rare, but nearly devastating postoperative complication. We treated a 26-year-old male who developed a contralateral ASDH shortly after craniectomy for evacuation of a traumatic ASDH. Burr-hole craniotomy was performed before decompressive craniectomy, and the bleeding source was a cortex artery within the frontal lobe contusion. Despite supportive therapy with barbiturate and mild hypothermia he expired 3 days later of brain death. Literature review suggests that the old are more susceptible to contralateral ASDH following evacuation of traumatic ASDH. Contralateral ASDH following evacuation of traumatic ASDH is a rare but potentially lethal complication, so neurosurgeons should try to detect such contralateral hematoma formation and prevent clinical deterioration.

  • Measurement-Device-Independent Entanglement Witness of Tripartite Entangled States and Its Applications

      Entanglement witness is of great importance in characterizing quantum systems. The imperfections in conventional entanglement witness schemes could lead to the misidentification of a separated state as an entangled state. Measurement-device-independent entanglement witness (MDIEW) has been proposed and demonstrated to resolve the imperfect measurement devices. So far, however, the MDIEW has been restricted to a two-party qubit entangled state. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate MDIEW for multipartite entangled states. We experimentally detect the genuine entanglement and the entanglement structure of a tripartite entangled state based on an eight-photon interferometry. Furthermore, with the verified multipartite entangled state, we demonstrate quantum randomness generation and open-destination quantum key distribution in an measurement-device-independent manner. Our research presents an important step toward building a robust and secure quantum network.

  • Light pulse in Λ-type cold-atom gases

      We investigate the behavior of the light pulse in Λ-type cold-atom gases with two counter-propagating control lights with equal strength by directly simulating the dynamic equations and exploring the dispersion relation. Our analysis shows that, depending on the length L0 of the stored wave packet and the decay rate γ of ground-spin coherence, the recreated light can behave differently. For long L0 and/or large γ, a stationary light pulse is produced, while two propagating light pulses appear for short L0 and/or small γ. In the γ→0 limit, the light always splits into two propagating pulses for a sufficiently long time. This scenario agrees with a recent experiment where two propagating light pulses are generated in laser-cooled cold-atom ensembles.

  • Demonstration of interferometric atom-pattern engineering via Rabi oscillations

      We report an experimental demonstration of atom-pattern engineering via Rabi oscillations. We make use of interferometric Raman beams to drive a microwave transition for laser-cooled atoms confined within an optical dipole trap. Up to nine fringes are patterned within a half wavelength of the Raman standing wave. We also demonstrate spatial atom localization by using two Raman pulses together with optical depletion. Our work may be useful in atom-pattern engineering for quantum information and simulation applications.

  • Quantum Coherence Witness with Untrusted Measurement Devices

      Coherence is a fundamental resource in quantum information processing, which can be certified by a coherence witness. Due to the imperfection of measurement devices, a conventional coherence witness may lead to fallacious results. We show that the conventional witness could mistake an incoherent state as a state with coherence due to the inaccurate settings of measurement bases. In order to make the witness result reliable, we propose a measurement-device-independent coherence witness scheme without any assumptions on the measurement settings. We introduce the decoy-state method to significantly increase the capability of recognizing states with coherence. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate the scheme in a time-bin encoding optical system.

  • Optimizing up-conversion single-photon detectors for quantum key distribution

      High-performance single-photon detectors (SPDs) at 1550-nm band are critical for fiber-based quantum communications. Among many types of SPDs, the up-conversion SPDs based on periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides are of great interest. Combined with a strong pump laser, the telecom single-photons are converted into short wavelength ones and detected by silicon-based SPDs. However, due to the difficulty of precise controlling waveguide profile, the direct coupling between a single-mode fiber and the waveguide is not efficient. Here by utilizing fiber taper with proper diameter, optimal mode-matching is achieved and coupling efficiency up to 93% is measured. With an optimized design, a system detection efficiency of 36% and noise counting rate of 90 cps are realized. The maximum detection efficiency is characterized as 40% with a noise counting rate of 200 cps. Numerical simulation results indicate that our device can significantly improve the performance of QKD and extend the communication distance longer than 200 km.

  • Error-disturbance tradeoff in sequential quantum measurements

      We derive a state-dependent error-disturbance tradeoff based on statistical distance in the sequential measurements of a pair of noncommutative observables and experimentally verify the relation with a photonic qubit system.
