  • Degenerate Bose gases near a d-wave shape resonance

      Understanding quantum many-body systems with strong interactions and unconventional phases therein is one of the most challenging tasks in physics. In cold atom physics, this has been a focused research topic for nearly two decades, where strong interactions are naturally created and well manipulated by bringing the system close to a scattering resonance. However, most of the studies thus far have been limited to the s-wave resonance. Here, we report the experimental observation of a tunable and broad d-wave shape resonance in a quantum degenerate 41K gas, hallmarked by the fact that the molecular binding energies are split into three branches. The measured lifetime in the resonance regime is found to be much longer than the characteristic timescale for many-body relaxations. The analysis of the breathing mode, excited by ramping through the resonance, suggests that a low-temperature atom–molecule mixture is produced. Our system offers great promise for studying a d-wave molecular superfluid.

  • Classifying N-Qubit entanglement via Bell's inequalities

      A classification of N-qubit entanglement was given by introducing the integer entanglement index EN. Some orders were established among various types of N-qubit entanglement: the larger the entanglement index, the larger maximal violation of the Bell's inequality is attainable and thus more entangled or less separable is the state.

  • Scalable quantum computing with linear optics and quantum memories

      Quantum computing is a powerful application of the laws of quantum physics. It is expected that quantum computing is more efficient than conventional computation methods at factoring large integers, performing database searches, and making quantum physics simulations. Single particles, such as atoms, photons, nuclear spins, and charges in superconductors, are the fundamental resources for quantum computing. Many scientist has observed that the linear optics with single photons is significant for scalable quantum computing. The basic requirements for the scalable optical quantum computing are single-photon sources, beam splitters, phase shifters, photodetectors, and feedback from the photodetector outputs. Some of the experiments have elucidated the feasibility of quantum computing, such as implementation of nondestructive CNOT gates were reported by Gasparoni et al. in 2004, Zhao et al. 2005. A nondestructive CNOT gate is an arbitrary entangled state that can be constructed and used in one-way quantum computation.

  • Quantum computing with linear optics and multi-photon entanglement

      We exploit multi-photon entanglement from parametric down-conversion, linear optical elements, and photon detection to perform proof-of-principle experiments of optical quantum computing, including generation of six-photon cluster states, demonstration of Shor's algorithm, and photon-loss-tolerant quantum encoding.

  • Dissociation of vasospasm-related morbidity and outcomes in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage treated with clazosentan

      Object. Clazosentan therapy after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has been found to be effective in reducing the incidence of vasospasm in randomized controlled trials. However, while vasospasm-related morbidity, including delayed ischemic neurological deficits (DINDs) and delayed cerebral infarctions, was consistently decreased, statistical significance was not demonstrated and outcomes were not affected by clazosentan treatment. The objective of this meta-analysis was to determine whether clazosentan treatment after aneurysmal SAH significantly reduced the incidence of DINDs and delayed cerebral infarctions and improved outcomes. Methods. All randomized controlled trials investigating the effect of clazosentan were retrieved via searches with sensitive and specific terms. Six variables were abstracted after the assessment of the methodological quality of the trials. Analyses were performed following the method guidelines of the Cochrane Back Review Group. Results. Four randomized, placebo-controlled trials met eligibility criteria, enrolling a total of 2181 patients. The meta-analysis demonstrated a significant decrease in the incidence of DINDs (relative risk [RR] 0.76 [95% CI 0.62- 0.92]) and delayed cerebral infarction (RR 0.79 [95% CI 0.63-1.00]) in patients treated with clazosentan after aneurysmal SAH. However, this treatment regimen was not shown to outcomes including functional outcomes measured by Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended (RR 1.12 [95% CI 0.96-1.30]) or mortality (RR 1.02 [95%CI 0.70-1.49]). Adverse events, including pulmonary complications, anemia, and hypotension, were all significantly increased in patients who received clazosentan therapy. Conclusions. The results of the present meta-analysis show that treatment with clazosentan after aneurysmal SAH significantly reduced the incidence of the vasospasm-related DINDs and delayed cerebral infarctions, but did not improve poor neurological outcomes in patients with aneurysmal SAH. Further study is required to elucidate the dissociation between vasospasm-related morbidity and outcomes.

  • Quantum nonlocality obtained from local states by entanglement purification

      We have applied an entanglement purification protocol to produce a single entangled pair of photons capable of violating a Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality from two pairs that individually could not. The initial poorly entangled photons were created by a controllable decoherence that introduced complex errors. All of the states were reconstructed using quantum state tomography which allowed for a quantitative description of the improvement of the state after purification.

  • Some addenda about the general formula of normal product calculation for boson exponential quadratic operators

      In this paper, we studied the general formula of normal product calculation for boson exponential quadratic operators (EQO) which is first obtained by WANG et al. [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 27 (1994) 6563]. It is shown that the boundness of boson EQO will result in a restriction on the applicable bounds of this formula. According to the restriction condition, the conclusion about unity operator given by MA et al. [Commun. Theor. Phys. (Beijing, China) 21 (1994) 119] should be made some corresponding corrections. At last, we extended this formula to the case of fermion for the convenience of later applications.

  • Quantum Teleportation in High Dimensions

      Quantum teleportation allows a "disembodied" transmission of unknown quantum states between distant quantum systems. Yet, all teleportation experiments to date were limited to a two-dimensional subspace of quantized multiple levels of the quantum systems. Here, we propose a scheme for teleportation of arbitrarily high-dimensional photonic quantum states and demonstrate an example of teleporting a qutrit. Measurements over a complete set of 12 qutrit states in mutually unbiased bases yield a teleportation fidelity of 0.75(1), which is well above both the optimal single-copy qutrit state-estimation limit of 1/2 and maximal qubit-qutrit overlap of 2/3, thus confirming a genuine and nonclassical three-dimensional teleportation. Our work will enable advanced quantum technologies in high dimensions, since teleportation plays a central role in quantum repeaters and quantum networks.

  • Indistinguishable tunable single photons emitted by spin-flip Raman transitions in InGaAs quantum dots

      This Letter reports all-optically tunable and highly indistinguishable single Raman photons from a driven single quantum dot spin. The frequency, linewidth, and lifetime of the Raman photons are tunable by varying the driving field power and detuning. Under continuous-wave excitation, subnatural linewidth single photons from off-resonant Raman scattering show an indistinguishability of 0.98(3). Under π pulse excitation, spin- and time-tagged Raman fluorescence photons show an almost vanishing multiphoton emission probability of 0.01(2) and a two-photon quantum interference visibility of 0.95(3). Lastly, Hong-Ou-Mandel interference is demonstrated between two single photons emitted from remote, independent quantum dots with an unprecedented visibility of 0.87(4).
